About Us
Our beginnings.
The company comes from modest beginnings. Bud Hampton purchased his first sawmill in Willamina, Oregon in 1942, initially to supply his lumber business in Tacoma, Washington. Both of Bud’s sons followed him into the business. Charles worked in the company’s sawmill operations while John started a wholesale lumber business, Hampton Lumber Sales (HLS) in 1950.
About Us
Hampton today
As the company grew to include forestland and new manufacturing facilities, Bud and his sons developed a deep commitment to people, community, and sustainability. Today those values are the heart of Hampton’s company culture. Now a fourth-generation family-owned company, Hampton has grown to include ten sawmills in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. Bud’s grandchildren, Jamey, David, and Elizabeth, are still at the helm and remain committed to sustainable forests and communities. Today they are joined by over 1,700 employees who help to make Hampton Lumber a sustainable and successful enterprise. In addition to the lumber we produce at our mills, our wholesale business sells lumber throughout the U.S. and our import/export division works with customers world-wide.
our forests
Green and growing
Today, the company owns roughly 290,000 acres of SFI certified forestland in Oregon and Washington and manages roughly 300,000 acres of public forestland in British Columbia.
our artsy side
Community and the arts
The Hampton family is a well-known supporter of the arts. Music and dance are particularly close to our hearts. Hampton brothers Jamey and David regularly perform together in their band, the Brother’s Jam. You can find the band playing “rootsy, jamming rock” throughout the Portland metro area. Jamey is also co-Artistic Director at the Portland based dance company BodyVox, which he founded with his wife in 1997. Committed to the long-term success of local arts programming, Jamey also currently serves on the board of the Pacific Northwest College of Art and the Portland Opera.
the wine biz
Oregon vines and wines
In 2016, we planted our first vineyard, Tall Tree, just outside of Monmouth, Oregon. We acquired nearby Fennwood Vineyard two years later. These vineyards produce quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes for winemakers throughout the region. In 2021, the family embarked on its first venture into winemaking with the purchase of the Carlton Winemakers Studio in Carlton, OR.
